Happiness is…eating out, you order a burger and it comes with a surprise side of…Onion Rings!

Yes, I have to admit it, I am a little onion ring obsessed. If I see them on a menu I have to order them and will rate a restaurant based on the quality of their onion rings alone!

Which reminds me of when we were on honeymoon in Vegas, my husband and I ordered a portion of chicken wings in every restaurant we ate at. But that’s a story for another time!

Homemade Crispy Onion Rings

So back to the onion rings. Yes I’m a big fan. But they have to be big, fresh and crispy.

Those greasy frozen ones from the packet just won’t cut the mustard.

The deep fryer restaurant variety are undoubtedly the best but they won’t do my clogging arteries any favours so I set about making my own oven baked healthy version.

The crunch factor is probably the most important thing to get right when making your own homemade onion rings. Unless they have a really crispy coating, then I’m out!

Panko Bread Crumbs

No one wants a soggy onion ring. For me the key to extra crunchy onion rings has to be panko breadcrumbs.

If you’re not familiar with them, panko breadcrumbs are a Japanese-style breadcrumb.

Crustless bread is ground into large flakes that make foods super crispy.

Panko breadcrumbs are crunchier than normal breadcrumbs because they don’t absorb as much grease, making them a slightly more healthy alternative than your regular bread crumbs.

As well as onion rings, I use them to coat and bake chicken or even fish, like these Crispy Baked Salmon Nuggets or these Tuna Sweetcorn Bites.

I buy my panko breadcrumbs in Tesco. They have their own brand. But you can also get them from asian supermarkets or online.

My Top Tip For Best Results!

So after crunch, what’s the next most important factor in a good onion ring?

Well the onion itself is pretty important. It has to be sweet and tender, but still with a bit of a bite and not soggy in the middle.

For me the key to the perfect middle is in the preparation.

And the best way I have found to getting this is soaking the onions in a buttermilk and milk mixture for several hours.

This might seem a bit too much faff but honestly it is worth it.

Plus I like being able to get that bit of preparation out of the way earlier in the day, so then I just need to coat the onion rings and pop them in the oven later on.

The buttermilk helps to make the onions very tender and sweet but if you can’t get hold of buttermilk then just normal milk is fine.

If you don’t have 6 hours to soak the onion rings then a couple of hours should suffice but warning…I’ve only ever tried this recipe after 6 hours of soaking so I cannot guarantee the results!

Onion Ring Seasonings

As for seasoning, I just added a small amount of cayenne pepper and some salt and pepper.

You can get a little bit more creative though with other spices and herbs and I can imagine some grated parmesan mixed in with the panko crust would be delicious too.

Or How about some garlic salt or even a creole seasoning?

How To Serve My Baked Onion Ring Recipe

These onion rings really do make the perfect side dish and if serving this way, then my recipe will serve 4-6.

So pair them with hot dogs or your favorite burgers for a weekend treat with a little pot of your favorite dipping sauce on the side! Mine is almost certainly hot sauce, but I like things spicy!

I’ve not tried these in the air fryer yet, but I think they would be amazing, so if you do try them this way, then let me know how they turned out!

Description

Wonderful crunchy onion rings, baked to keep them nice and healthy!

Ingredients

  • 2 large white onions
  • 250ml buttermilk
  • 300ml milk
  • 100g plain flour
  • 2 tbsp cornflour
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
  • pinch of salt and pepper
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 150g panko breadcrumbs

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions, cut them into ½ inch slices and separate them out into rings.
  2. Mix the buttermilk and milk together in a large bowl or dish. Add the onion rings, cover with cling film and refrigerate for a minimum of 6 hours.
  3. After 6 hours preheat the oven to 200c. Mix the flour, cornflour, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper in a large ziplock sandwich bag. Remove all the onion rings from the milk and put them straight into the bag with the flour mixture. Close the bag and shake until the onion rings are fully coated. Kids will love helping with this part!
  4. Beat the eggs in a small bowl and spread the panko breadcrumbs out onto a plate. Line 2 baking trays with parchment paper.
  5. One at a time take each onion ring from the bag, dip in the egg mixture and then coat with the breadcrumbs. Place onto the baking tray in a single layer.
  6. Once all the onion rings have been coated and placed on the trays spray them with an oil or cooking spray. Bake for 15 minutes until they are a lovely golden brown, turning once and spraying again.
  7. Serve immediately with ketchup or another dip.

Why are my onion rings not crispy? ›

Too much batter.

This is almost worse than having batter that's too thin. Instead of staying light and crisp, an onion ring with too much batter will retain too much internal moisture, and as soon as it comes out of the oil, the batter starts getting soggy.

Why does my batter fall off my onion rings? ›

When it comes to batter, ensure it's not too thin or it will drip right off your onion ring. Also, make sure your batter is ice cold, as this makes for a lighter coating when it's fried. In contrast, ensure your oil is piping hot at around 360 to 375 degrees Fahrenheit before dropping in your battered rings.

How to keep onion rings from getting soggy? ›

Keep the fried onion rings warm on a baking sheet in a 200°F oven while you fry the rest of the rings. Keep the onion rings separate from each other. Don't pile them on top of each other, or they will get soggy.

How to make things crispy in oven? ›

Another option is to hold off adding the oil until it's been baking for 5-10 minutes, then toss in oil, then cook it for another at least 10 minutes. This was the secret for me for getting crispy chickpeas, where as when I would oil them first, they'd just come out sort of mushy, but hard.

How to crisp up onion rings in an air fryer? ›

Using an Air Fryer to Reheat Onion Rings
  1. Optional: Spray your air fryer basket with a bit of oil.
  2. Place your onion rings in the basket.
  3. Set your temperature to 350.
  4. Cook them for about 5 minutes.
  5. Remove the fried onion rings when the outside of the rings are crispy and brown.

What makes batter stay crispy? ›

My first choice here for a really crispy batter will be a combination of rice flour and cornstarch. Not so keen about using rice flour alone for deep-frying. The combination of Cornstarch and rice flour gives you that thin, light, and really crispy coating on the food.

What type of onion makes the best onion rings? ›

You may be wondering what kind of onion is best when making onion rings. This recipe is so good, that you can really use pretty much any variety. That said, I usually go with white onions as they tend to fry up really well.

Why soak onions in milk before frying? ›

Soaking the onions helps dilute their sulfur content, taking away that pungent, raw bite and leaving you with a pleasant, milder onion that still has some snap to it. Cuisine At Home also recommends maintaining ultimate crispiness by double-dipping the onions in buttermilk and seasoned flour.

Why do you soak onions in ice water before making onion rings? ›

Soaking Onions in Ice Water

Soaking onions in water for 15-20 minutes helps to neutralize the flavors of the onion and lessen the “bite”. It also brings out a sweet flavor and makes them a bit crunchier.

How to get breading to stick to onion rings? ›

A trick for getting your breading to stick better and not fall off as much when frying is to cover the breaded onion rings with a damp paper towel for 10-15 minutes after breading while the oil heats up. This helps it get a little bit tacky and stick better so less of it falls off in the hot oil.

What happens if you eat undercooked onion rings? ›

Onions may cause symptoms of gastrointestinal upset, such as heartburn, bloating, abdominal discomfort, nausea, and vomiting, in susceptible individuals, which may aggravate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome in affected individuals. These symptoms are relatively more common when eating onions raw rather than cooked.

Can I leave onion rings out overnight? ›

Even after sitting out overnight, the rings are still crunchy. Lastly, the dipping sauce. Gone are the days of suffocating soggy, tasteless onion rings in a puddle of ketchup.

Can you cut onions ahead of time for onion rings? ›

In the test kitchen, we've established that in applications featuring raw onions, it is best to chop them immediately before you need them. That's because when an onion is cut, the ruptured cells release enyzmes called alliinases.

How to make soggy fries crispy in oven? ›

First, preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Then, spread your French fries out on a parchment-lined baking sheet, making sure none of them are touching (if they're too crowded, they won't get as crispy). Heat them in the oven for about eight to ten minutes, then give them a quick toss.

Can you cook frozen onion rings in the oven? ›

How do you make Bloomin onions crispy again? ›

Simply preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees, cut the onion in half, and spray it with a small amount of cooking spray or oil to get a bit of extra crispiness.
