ingredients

1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup honey
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups old-fashioned oats
1 1/2 cup sliced almonds
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 1/2 cup raisins or dried cranberries
1 cup miniature chocolate chips, optional

directions

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Have a 15x10 rimmed baking sheet ready.

Combine the oil and honey in a saucepan over low heat. Stir until combined. Whisk in the vanilla. Remove from the heat and set aside.

In a bowl, combine the oats, almonds, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Mix well. Pour the honey mixture evenly over the oat mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until everything is coated.

Spread the granola out in an even layer on the baking sheet. Place in the oven and bake at 300 degrees F for 40 minutes, stirring gently every 10 minutes.

Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the granola cool completely on the baking sheet.

Combine the cooled granola with the dried fruit (and chocolate chips, if using). Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to 1 week at room temperature (or freeze for up to 3 months).

common recipe questions

Can I use other nuts or dried fruit?

Just make sure to keep the amounts in the same ratio. For example, if you use other dried fruit, chop it up to equal the same amount called for of raisins.

Is homemade granola cheaper than store bought? The ingredients seem expensive.

Buying the ingredients in larger or bulk packaging will definitely make this cheaper per ounce than buying it in the store. However, in some cases it may be cheaper to buy a small package of granola than making it at home. This recipe is addicting so we're pretty sure you'll want to make it a lot!

Can I use other oil than vegetable oil?

Yes, you can use other oils. Many people prefer to use coconut oil or avocado oil instead.

I can't have honey, what else can I use in this recipe?

If you are allowed to have molasses, maple syrup, or agave, any of those should work.

I made this recipe today and it's really good! I used coconut oil instead of vegetable oil, and I left out the almonds and dried fruit because I was making this for my granddaughter's high school open house and they wanted just plain granola. It was easy to make, but I found that it was ready after about 25 minutes. The first batch got a little burned because I baked it for close to 40 minutes, but the other batches (I made 4 batches) turned out great! I'm looking forward to making this again and adding almonds and dried fruit.

This granola freezes great! I've been making up triple batches when I make it and freezing it in small pkgs. Super easy grab-and-go snack for the whole family.

Very good and easy , I left out the almonds but added pecans and threw in some coconut. Such a good basic recipe!

My husband and I absolutely love this recipe! I did modify it I used coconut oil instead of the vegetable oil and I added dried cherries, golden raisins, pecans, cranberries and of course the sliced almonds. I also doubled the liquid and this helped because it as just a little too dry for us the first time. I portion it out and take it to work for our employees :) And now they request it!

What an inexpensive way to make your own granola rather than those boxed varieties. The flavor can also be changed or enhanced by using almond extract in place of the vanilla. To add some color or get the kids to eat, reduce the amount of raisins to half cup and add a cup of M & Ms. As another way to enjoy this granola, serve layered with vanilla yogurt and fresh berries.

Love it! I use 1/2 the sugar and it is still fantastic!

Homemade Granola is perfect for yogurt toppings and to toss in cereal! Better yet its easy to make. I think the brown sugar is what really brings out the flavor and I would add a touch more to it. You also have your choice of raisins or cranberries (or use a combo or tried other dried fruit like dried cherries)

This homemade granola is a delicious way to eat healthy on the go! For a faster cooling time, put the granola pan in the refrigerator. I'd recommend using cranberries instead of raisins for the perfect balance of tart and sweet!

This is the 1st granola recipe I have made & I love it! So easy & fast & delicious! My husband is always looking for the 'perfect' granola & he said he's found it! I actually omit the brown sugar & add in about 1/2cup of sweetened coconut. I also add roasted pumpkin & sunflower seeds after it has finished baking.

Awesome recipe! We replaced one cup of the raisins/cranberries and added a diced apple after the first 10 minutes of baking. We love it and will eat as a morning breakfast cereal with milk. Would like to add some flaxseed on our next batch!

Great basic granola recipe. As comments mention, it can be tweaked to suit different tastes. My only problem, if you want to call it a problem, is I thought it was a little too sweet. I'll cut down on the sugar next time. Thanks!

So easy, my two year old helped make it. We added some cocoa powder to the mix and it was perfectly sweet without adding more sugar. New family fave.

As an avid granola eater, I can truly say that this is the best darn gronala I have ever made and tasted!! It was so easy to make and I really like how I already had all of the ingredients on hand to make it. I have two girls age 6 and 4 and they just can't get enough of it, which is okay because it is a very healthy snack. Thank you so much for posting this recipe.

    December 18, 2012

Love this!! Quick, easy and delicious. This granola disappears as fast as I can make it. To make it "chunkier", I slightly increase the amount of liquids added to the dry ingredients, then during the last 10 minutes I add the fruit and pat down the entire tray with the back of my cookie spatula. After it cools you are left with more nuggets of deliciousness.

Wow oh wow! Followed this to the letter, aside from chopping my own almonds. Fantastic. Served this with fresh fruit and vanilla Greek yogurt instead of cheesecake and ice cream and it was a hit! Great flavor. Any ideas on making it clump more?

Delicious! I used walnuts instead because I didn't have almonds in the pantry. So so good! I tried a bite every 10 minutes when it was time to turn and mix. I agree with the other reviewers who said it was the perfect combination of salty and sweet. Can't wait to have this for cereal or in yogurt. Or just plain.

This is the best granola I've tasted so far. I followed the directions as written with the exception of adding a little more honey. The flavors are excellent and I like the hint of saltiness I taste. I will definitely make this again and again. As of right now, I don't want to eat another cereal again.

This recipe is absolutely delicious! My husband says it is the best cereal he has eaten...ever! It has the perfect balance of salty and sweet. The recipe is easy to add to... I added in some pepitas and flax seed. Love it!!!

This recipe is awesome! The taste reminds my wife and I of the homemade granola we purchased from quakers on our honeymoon...fantastic! I turned the temperature up a little after the 40 minutes because I like it nice and crispy, and stirred it every 5 minutes for an additional 10 minutes. I also added chopped pecans because my wife loves them. Great and simple recipe! Cheaper and much better than store bought granola. Thanks

I have never written a review on any site, ever. And let me tell you, MAKE THIS! It is absolutely amazing. I added some sunflower seeds, shredded coconut, and dried banana. I wouldn't of changed it for the world. Please make!

  34. Crunchy Girl REVIEW:
    June 16, 2012

I usually don't bother with reviews, but I had to come back and write one for this stuff. This is hands down the best granola I've ever had! It totally beats the store bought stuff, and is cheaper too! It's really almost fool-proof..just make sure you stir every 10 minutes. It's not overly sweet, and there's just a hint of saltiness in each bite to balance the sugar/honey. Oh my goodness...I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing that I found this recipe!

  35. amess REVIEW:
    May 15, 2012

People who said it burned - did you use old fashioned or one minute oats? That makes a big difference I think. I used quick oats the first time and only had them on half the time and watched them carefully. The old fashioned took a lot longer and are more chewy in the end.

  37. Steph REVIEW:
    May 2, 2012

This recipe is awesome! I cut the brown sugar down to 1/4c. and it was still plenty sweet for me (but I like subtle sweetness). I used local honey from the farmers market and added 1/2 teaspoon almond extract just to kick it up a notch. Excellent!

  38. Jazzie REVIEW:
    April 30, 2012

This recipe was amazing. For all the reviews that say that it burned the only thing I can think of was you weren't stirring it every 10 minutes. It is very important to mix it up every 10 minutes. I have absolutely no complaints about this. Yum yum yum :)

I love this granola recipe. It was easy to make and tastes great. I did however substitute the almonds for chopped pecans and I used dried cranberries. I also threw in some white chocolate chips after it was cooled and it was a perfect treat!

Question - When I cooked it for 40 minutes it burned. When I cooked it for 15 minutes it was fine. I checked the tempurature of my oven at it said that it was 300. What am I doing wrong?

Wonderful granola. Made it identical to recipe (with raisins). Great added to cereal, yogurt or just eat by itself. If you don't want to clean the pan, line it with foil with no cleanup at all. Will experiment with other ingredients next time but using the same base.

    June 19, 2010

Great stuff! I browse this website occasionally but I've never left a comment. This recipe deserved a comment! I LOVED it!! It's the middle of summer and boiling hot but I turned on the oven anyway. It was worth it! I followed the recipe exactly...except I reduced the amount of oil to about 1/6 cup to make it a little lower in fat and added a little more honey. It came out perfectly crispy, sweet and WAY better than the store-bought stuff! (Plus, I figured up the cost-per-batch. For me, in the midwest, it was only $4.50. And no preservatives! YIPPEE!) THUMBS UP! THUMBS UP! :)

Really fabulous - my house guest from Germany requests it for breakfast everyday with vanilla yogurt and fresh fruit!! Used non-stick spray on the extra large cookie sheet, and added sliced AND slivered almonds, wheat germ, and coconut. Used dark brown sugar and maple syrup as the sweeteners - a little less of both as we're trying to cut down on sugar! Delish!!!

This is a really good recipe. After reading the reviews, I made a few adjustments to my personal taste (only in the things I added) and it was great!!!! I tried this after reading everyone's reviews and it exceeded my expectation. Many people talked about variations and I tried some different fruits and nuts with it. Bottom line is this recipe makes delicious granola no matter what your favorite additions. I tried blueberries and cranberries with pistacios, sunflower seeds and almonds and it's fantastic. Next time I'm going to add some coconut. Trader Joes has a great selection of dried fruits so you can try most anything.I did not have any problem getting this to crisp up or adding the fruit after it was cool. It was easy and delicious.

this is great. EVERYBODY wants a copy of the recipe ! I used a cookie sheet and it worked well for just the right crisp level though it requires a gentle turning so as not to spill . well worth the effort! I also added walnut pieces to the almonds ( 3/4 almond 3/4 walnuts) as for the berries, I used a package of raisins and cranberries mix - no problem stirring them into cooled mixture.

  61. Guest Foodie REVIEW:
    March 18, 2008

This turned out very well. The recipe was easy to follow and included ingrediants I already had on hand or were easy to find. I made one batch following the recipe and made another substituting pure maple syrup for the honey and chopped pecans for the almonds. Also quite yummy. My husband said he was impressed with the results! :) My only suggestion is to be sure to pay close attention the last 10 minutes. I turned the oven off at 35 minutes and pulled it out at about 37. I was worried about it overbaking as it had already began to brown.

  62. Adrienne REVIEW:
    March 6, 2008

Not sure what happened. I followed the recipe to a "T," and I could not get it crisp. It started to have an overbaked taste, so I didn't want to leave it in longer than 50 minutes. Any tips on where I may have gone wrong?

    November 2, 2007

While this is indeed a tasty cereal or snack, I believe that there is a bit of a problem with not adding raisins or cranberries until it completely cools. I did it as directed, but the cranberries didn't mix with the other ingredients at all. I used Thick & Rough Oatmeal and their recipe on the box is very similar, but adds the fruit before baking. They also suggest coating the pan with a non-stick butter flavored spray, which might have saved me some of the mess of breaking the cereal out of the pan.

this granola was simple (good for me cuz i usually mess recipes up) really crunchy and yummy and there were easy ingredients...good with yogurt (especially berry flavor)...but a tip if your gonna make it, place a pretty thin layer on the cooking sheet because i made mine to thick and it wasn't getting crispy enough till i transfered it to a larger one.
