Acclaimed playwright Nina Raine is being lined up to adapt the new version, which I gather will tease out the story’s darker tones in what will be Raine’s first TV adaptation. The new version could air in 2020, 25 years after the famous Colin Firth version. Mammoth’s managing director Damien Timmer says, “In this age of the box set — with audiences loving to binge on complex, serialised dramas — it feels absolutely right to reassess the classics. Nina Raine is a devoted fan of the book, but she’s never seen any previous adaptations — so, pleasingly, the novel only exists in her imagination”. A big question, of course,…2 min
