Sam Bennett's Heart Health Journey: Overcoming Atrial Fibrillation and Getting Back on Track (2026)

"I experienced heart flutters, palpitations, and a troubling feeling in my chest" – Sam Bennett is back in training after a frightening health scare...

Sam Bennett, the renowned Irish sprinter who recently signed with Pinarello Q36.5 for the 2026 season, has made his return to training following a serious heart scare he faced late last year. Doctors diagnosed him with atrial fibrillation, a condition that can significantly affect heart function.

After undergoing an ablation procedure to address this issue, Bennett is now back on his bike, eager to resume his professional cycling career. "Honestly, I didn't want to bother anyone unnecessarily," the 35-year-old athlete shared. "I waited until I was sure the doctors were available and then I called them." He recalled that towards the end of last year, he felt unwell and couldn’t quite grasp what was happening to his body. "When I started training again, I experienced some unusual sensations during the first three days.

"I thought, 'Wow, I'm really out of shape!' Then one night, while lying in bed, I began feeling heart flutters, palpitations, and a strange discomfort in my chest. My heart rate felt like it was escalating, and the uncertainty of not knowing what was wrong only heightened my anxiety."

Atrial fibrillation is recognized as the most prevalent cardiac concern among middle-aged cyclists. It occurs due to irregular electrical signals originating in the heart's upper chambers, known as the atria, which often results in an abnormal reading on heart monitors. This condition can lead to a significant decrease in performance, with athletes experiencing up to a 30% reduction in power output.

"Health must take precedence," Bennett emphasized. "The team has been incredible throughout this process. We are taking things gradually and observing how my body responds. I've had considerable time away from competitive cycling, and we need to assess how I react to the training loads we introduce."

He explained, "I was on blood thinners for eight weeks to mitigate any risk of injury in case of a fall, but now I'm back in action and on the road again. Although I don't have a specific schedule yet, I’m determined not to be overly complacent. I'm aiming to be fully prepared by the end of March, ensuring I push myself responsibly according to what my body can handle."

Bennett elaborated on his experience during training, stating, "At one point, I was getting only 30 or 40% of the normal blood flow, which made sprinting incredibly challenging. I'd push to sprint, only to find I needed to sit down. That situation seems to correlate with my recent struggles, but I won’t truly understand its impact until I start competing again."

Looking ahead to this season, Bennett expressed, "My primary goal is to reach a competitive level where I can participate actively again. If I achieve that, I would definitely love the opportunity to ride in a Grand Tour once more. However, I am also mindful of not wasting anyone’s time. This team has offered me a second chance, and I’m all in for this year—it’s all or nothing!"

But here's where it gets controversial: Can athletes truly balance their health and high-performance demands? With so much at stake, how should they prioritize their well-being against their competitive goals? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
